Coconut Water, Banana, Mango, Coconut Flakes, Choc-a-lot Vega Protein Powder, Raw Cacao Powder and Chia Seed
(Substitutions: Filtered Water or Nut Milk; Pineapple or Oranges; Flax Seed)
Today is the start of a long weekend for me, I slept in late and slowly awoke to my cat, Wooly Bear, wrapped around my neck like a scarf. He’s a cuddler alright! As I lay in bed pondering the hours ahead, I have the full intent of lounging around all day. Then…all of the sudden…a HUGE craving for chocolate! Since February of this year, I swore off of refined sugars and processed foods (which includes most chocolatey treats). So, needless to say, I’ve been somewhat deprived of the sweet, rich goodness that chocolate provides. I’ve been doing so well with juicing and smoothies over the last 6 months, that I felt the need to treat myself this morning. Most of my smoothies are usually “green”, meaning I pack piles of Kale, Spinach or Chard into them but today I decided to forgo the greens to really get a rich chocolate flavor. I will be drinking some green juices later today, so I’m not so concerned with not having the greens in my morning smoothie. The idea was to still make a highly nutritious smoothie but find a way to still get that “Chocolate Shake” sensation. This recipe is something I came up with on the fly and if you are a chocolate lover, I don’t see a way that you would not enjoy this smoothie to the fullest. To get the “tropical” flavors, I used Coconut Water (instead of filtered water), Coconut Flakes, Banana and Mango…a perfect combo to drive home that “happy drink on a secluded island” taste. But don’t let the decadent taste fool you, this puppy is chock full of protein, potassium, antioxidants and hydration to help control your cholesterol, boost your immune system and even assist in preventing cancer. So, kick back, relax and enjoy!
8 – 10 oz of Coconut Water (or filtered water, or nut milk)
1 frozen Banana
1 Cup Frozen Mango chunks (or Pineapple or Oranges)
1 scoop Vega Smoothie Powder (Choc-a-lot)
2 Tbsp of Raw Cacao Powder
1 Tbsp Chia Seed
1 small handful of Coconut Flakes (optional)
Add 8oz of Coconut Water to your blender. Add frozen banana and mango chunks. Blend on “Crush Ice” setting until it sounds as if there is nothing being crushed anymore and then switch to “liquify” setting (about another 1-2 minutes). Add in the Chia Seeds, Cacao, Vega Protein and half of the Coconut Flakes. Blend (on liquify setting) one more time for another 1-2 minutes. Pour into a large, tall glass. Sprinkle the rest of the Coconut Flakes on your finished Smoothie. CLEAN UP BEFORE DRINKING (this reenforces good habits and a new regimen).
