BEET JUICE ENERGY SMOOTHIE

BEET JUICE (EXTRACTED FROM RED BEET, CARROT, CELERY, ORANGE, PINEAPPLE & RED CHARD), BANANA, STRAWBERRIES, GOJI BERRIES, VIVA VANILLA VEGA PROTEIN, ACAI, MACA, CHIA SEED, FLAX MEAL

Normally, I keep my “juices” and “smoothies” separate from one another. Both have their benefits, as you’ve probably heard me say a whole bunch of times. I reserve most of my fruits for Smoothies (still adding greens of course) but then I go crazy with protein powders like Vega, Spirulina, Maca, Hemp and other mix-ins for fiber, such as Chia and Flax. To me, a Smoothie is usually a sweeter “start out the day” kind of meal; it’s got protein, vitamins, minerals and insoluble fiber. It’s packed with energy and is absorbed by the body quicker than “solid” food yet still controls our glucose levels by keeping in the pulp.

Juicing, on the other hand, I always like to keep “clean”…no pulp…mostly greens and veggies…no mix-ins (maybe Turmeric or Hemp Oil on occasion). I want immediate absorption of the nutrients in the juice; which happens much quicker than with a smoothie, due to the lack of pulp. And since the absorption is so quick, we want to make sure we don’t spike our glucose levels, which is why we go mostly greens and veggies. If you “extract” the juice of too much fruit, you WILL get a sugar rush and we all know that coming down from one of those is never any fun.

All that said, this morning I noticed that I had an extra Beet juice that I made yesterday. I was really in the mood for a smoothie, as I usually am at the crack of dawn. So I decided to combine them both and see what I come up with. The result was not only delicious but packed with enough nutrition to keep me going into the afternoon. It’s a good way to get the variety of what all these fruits and veggies have to offer but without the “heaviness” of blending all of it. Enjoy!

12oz previously extracted Beet Juice (mine was Beet, Carrot, Celery, Orange, Pineapple, Red Chard)
1 Frozen Banana
1 handful Frozen Strawberries
1 handful dried Goji Berries
1 scoop Vega Protein (I used Viva Vanilla)
2 tsp Maca Powder
1 Tbsp Acai Powder
1 Tbsp Chia Seeds
2 Tbsp Flax Meal
4 Ice Cubes

Pour Beet Juice into the blender along with the frozen fruits and ice. Blend on crush ice setting until cracking stops…then blend on liquify for about 40 secs. Add in the Goji Berries, powders, Chia and Flax. Blend again on liquify setting about 1 minute. Pour into a large, tall glass. CLEAN UP BEFORE DRINKING (this reenforces good habits and a new regimen). Enjoy your smoothie w/ your favorite straw; although, for Earthโ€™s sake, I recommend a glass one from Glass Dharma http://glassdharma.com.
