So, everyone in the health community seems to be buzzing a lot about “alkalizing” foods. The word gets thrown around all over the place but do we REALLY know what it means? If not, I will try to explain it simply. Alkalinity is what helps neutralize Acidity. We can measure the pH in our blood and the best place to be is around 7.35 – 7.45 (slightly alkaline). If the blood pH is anywhere below 7.0, it is considered to be acidic. The average diet of the majority of people these days is highly acidic. Certain foods such as meat, dairy, eggs, refined sugars, white flour, processed foods, artificial sweeteners, coffee and soft drinks all contribute the acidity in the blood. In order to lower the acidity and raise the alkalinity, more than 50% of our diet should consist of fruits, green vegetables, peas, beans, lentils, spices, herbs, seasonings, seeds and nuts. From “An acidic balance will: decrease the body’s ability to absorb minerals and other nutrients, decrease the energy production in the cells, decrease it’s ability to repair damaged cells, decrease it’s ability to detoxify heavy metals, make tumor cells thrive, and make it more susceptible to fatigue and illness. A blood pH of 6.9, which is only slightly acidic, can induce coma and death”.

All of that said, again we are given more reasons to abandon our old, destructive habits. Not only for weight loss; not only for the compassion of all animals; not only for the environment; but for our own health and well being. We’re all going to live until around the same age, some of us possibly longer than others…but…the real question is HOW DO YOU WANT TO LIVE? I, for one, do not want to spend my later years in life confined to my couch or a wheel chair, in and out of the hospital, taking numerous prescription drugs and falling apart mentally and physically from fatigue, pain or disease. I’d like to thrive. It took me a while to “get it” but now I do; EATING IS PREVENTATIVE MEDICINE. By following our taste buds and appetites, we are slowly killing ourselves. Unlearn and retrain the way you eat…your taste buds will follow!

8 – 12 oz Hemp Milk
1 large handful Baby Kale
1 large handful Baby Spinach
1 Banana
1 Mango
1 cup Mixed Berries (Blackberries, Strawberries, Raspberries)
Juice of 1/2 Lime
1 scoop Vega One (French Vanilla)
1 Tbsp Maca Powder
1 tsp Spirulina Powder
1 Tbsp Chia Seeds
1 Tbsp Flax Meal
4-5 Ice cubes (if fruits are not frozen)

Pour Hemp Milk into the blender along with the Baby Kale and Baby Spinach. Blend on liquify for about 40 secs. Add in Banana, Mango, Berries, Lime Juice and Ice Cubes. Blend crush ice setting until cracking stops…then blend again on liquify setting for about 30-40 secs. If too thick, you can always adjust by adding more Hemp Milk. Add Maca, Spirulina, Vega, Chia and Flax and blend one more time on liquify until very smooth. Pour into a large, tall glass. CLEAN UP BEFORE DRINKING (this reenforces good habits and a new regimen). Enjoy!

Don’t forget to check out all of the great plant-based, whole food products from Vega. Their smoothie powders are delicious, nutritious, animal-free and are the foundation for all of my smoothie recipes.

Enjoy your smoothie w/ your favorite straw; although, for Earth’s sake, I recommend a glass one from Glass Dharma
