Creamy Coconut Mocha Maple Smoothie

So you just “hit the wall” after pushing yourself hard during this morning’s workout. You’re looking to get some energy back and recover so you can do it all again tomorrow. Am I getting warm? Well, look no further! This smoothie has got all the tricks of the trade when it comes to post-workout fuel!

Coconut Water helps hydrate and replace lost electrolytes, while the Banana and Maple Syrup restores some carbohydrate (for muscle glycogen). The Vega Sport, Avocado and seeds bring in the protein, Omega fatty acids, anti-inflammatory properties, BCAAs and Glutamine which are all vital in helping repair and build new muscle fiber.

But why the Green Coffee Powder, you ask? Well, coffee not only adds a deep flavor which compliments the Chocolate but green coffee also provides a low dose of caffeine (about half of a standard cup of coffee); which not only provides a nice gradual boost of energy but has been shown to help athletes recover quicker!

So overall, this smoothie is not only a nutritional powerhouse and tastes delicious but everything was carefully combined to assist you in getting back out there, doing whatever it is you do, quicker and more efficiently. I guess I’m pretty good at making stuff that sounds like a dessert but is insanely healthy! 😉

12 oz Coconut Water

1/2 Banana

1/2 Avocado

1 serving Vega Sport Performance Protein (Chocolate)

1 tsp Green Coffee Powder

2 Tbsp Chia or Hemp Seeds

1 Tbsp Pure Maple Syrup

Ice (if desired)

Blend all ingredients on high speed until smooth and creamy. Enjoy!

The Fire Fighter Smoothie

When this time of year rolls around I look forward to Cranberries being in season. But not just because these little, plump berries pack a tart punch and are a tasty tradition around these parts; but also because they are truly medicine in disguise! In fact, Native Americans were using Cranberries for everything from purifying the blood, relieving stomach cramps and fevers, to utilizing it’s dyeing properties for jewelry and clothing, long before we ever commercialized the popular canned sauce as a holiday meal side dish.

Cranberries are low in sugar, calories and boast high levels of vitamin C and fiber. One of my favorite benefits of the cranberry are it’s antioxidant properties which help reduce inflammation. Since I’m a self admitted “Cardio Junkie”, I seem to be constantly in recovery mode from my workouts. I’m always looking for the best combination of nutrients to help ease soreness and inflammation. That said, I came up with “The Fire Fighter” smoothie this morning which combines the power of Cranberries along with other known anti-inflammatory ingredients such as Turmeric, Orange and Coconut Oil. And with a little extra help (with basically every other needed nutrient requirement), Vega One tops this creamy smoothie off with a nice subtle vanilla flavor.

It’s very exciting when culinary and medicinal converge harmoniously. It is this alchemy which we can rely on to not only reverse disease but to ultimately reverse our entire way of thinking!

8 oz Unsweetened Almond Milk
1 Frozen Banana
1/2 Cup Fresh Cranberries
1 Orange (no peel)
1 tsp Ground Turmeric Root (or a thumb size of fresh)
1 Tbsp Unrefined Coconut Oil
1 serving Vega One French Vanilla
2 Tbsp Ground Flax Seed

Blend all ingredients on high until smooth. Pour into a glass and enjoy!

TURMERIC MANGO TANGO (Smoothie)

ALMOND MILK, BANANA, MANGO, POMEGRANATE SEEDS, GOJI BERRIES, TURMERIC, VEGA PROTEIN (VANILLA), MACA POWDER, GINGER, CINNAMON, COCONUT OIL AND CHIA/FLAX BLEND

(Adapted from “Turmeric Smoothie Recipe Makes A Delicious & Powerful Antioxidant” by Joe Martino; Collective Evolution)

I am so completely engaged in the flavors of autumn here in New England…pomegranate, cranberries, ginger, cinnamon, cloves, cardamom, nutmeg, etc. Tart, nutty & sweet (my favorite flavor combo). This smoothie takes that to an even higher level with the addition of Turmeric. When I came across Joe Martino’s recipe online, I just had to make it myself. And, as usual, I tweaked it a bit. I won’t go into huge detail about all of the benefits since you’ve probably read my rants before about how good Turmeric is for you (anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, cancer cell fighter, improved brain function, etc) but the simple fact of the matter is the more Turmeric you put into your body everyday, the more help you’re getting in fighting off disease. And a smoothie (or juice) is the easiest, most perfect vehicle to deliver it to your system.

8 oz Almond Milk
1 Fresh Banana
1/2 Cup Frozen Mango
1/2 Cup Pomegranate Seeds
1/4 Cup Goji Berries
1 scoop VEGA PROTEIN SMOOTHIE (VIVA VANILLA)
1 Tbsp Coconut Oil
1 tsp Turmeric Powder
1 tsp Maca Powder
1/2 tsp Ginger (peeled, chopped)
1/2 tsp Cinnamon
1 Tbsp Chia Seed
1 Tbsp Flax Seed

Pour Almond Milk into the blender along with the Banana, Mango, Pomegranate Seeds and Goji Berries. Blend on crush ice setting until cracking stops…then blend again on liquify setting for about 30-40 secs. If too thick, you can always adjust by adding more Almond Milk. Add Vega, Coconut Oil, Turmeric, Maca, Ginger, Cinnamon Chia and Flax and blend one more time on liquify until very smooth. Pour into a large, tall glass. CLEAN UP BEFORE DRINKING (this reenforces good habits and a new regimen). Enjoy!

Don’t forget to check out all of the great plant-based, whole food products from Vega. Their smoothie powders are delicious, nutritious, animal-free and are the foundation for all of my smoothie recipes. http://myvega.com/

Enjoy your smoothie w/ your favorite straw; although, for Earth’s sake, I recommend a glass one from Glass Dharma http://glassdharma.com.

Real Orange Juice (Extracted)

Golden Beet, Orange, Cranberries, Carrots and Turmeric

Instead of opening up a concentrated, sugary carton of OJ in the morning, why not make this real Orange Juice? The pairing of ingredients makes this a serious antioxidant powerhouse with a laundry list of benefits. Packed with fiber, vitamin a, vitamin c, vitamin e and beta carotene, this juice is Cancer’s worst nightmare; an alkalizer that is great for the eyes, brain, skin and heart. It can help lower blood pressure, cholesterol and relieve inflammation as well. This juice is the swiss army knife of health. You can’t afford to NOT drink this.

1 Golden Beet
1 Orange
1/2 Cup Cranberries
3 Carrots
1 tsp of Turmeric (or 1″ Fresh Turmeric)

Prep and extract all ingredients in your juicer. If using Turmeric Powder, whisk into juice afterward. Enjoy!
